The Molecular Gas in the Circumnuclear Region of Seyfert Galaxies1
نویسنده
چکیده
Sub-arcsecond IRAM Plateau de Bure mm-interferometric observations of the CO (2-1) line emission in the Seyfert 1 NGC 3227 and the Seyfert 2 NGC 1068 have revealed complex kinematic systems in the inner 100 pc to 300 pc that are not consistent with pure circular motion in the host galaxies. Modeling of these kinematic systems with elliptical orbits in the plane of the host galaxy (representing gas motion in a bar potential) is a possible solution but does not reproduce all features observed. A better description of the complex kinematics is achieved by circular orbits which are tilted out of the plane of the host galaxy. This could indicate that the thin circumnuclear gas disk is warped. In the case of NGC 1068 the warp model suggests that at a radius of ∼ 70 pc, the gas disk is oriented edge-on providing material for the obscuration of the AGN nucleus. The position-velocity diagrams show rising rotation curves at r ≤ 13 pc and an indication for large enclosed masses of ≥2×107M for NGC 3227 and ≥108M for NGC 1068 within the central 25 pc. Galaxy Interaction and Starburst-seyfert Connection
Galaxy interactions are studied in terms of the starburst-Seyfert connection. The starburst requires a high rate of gas supply. Since the efficiency for supplying the gas is high in a galaxy interaction, although the companion is not necessarily discernible, Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear starbursts are expected to be interacting. Since the large amounts of circumnuclear gas and dust obscu...

Context. Previous molecular gas observations at arcsecond-scale resolution of the Seyfert 2 galaxy M51 suggest the presence of a dense circumnuclear rotating disk, which may be the reservoir for fueling the active nucleus and obscures it from direct view in the optical. However, our recent interferometric CO(3-2) observations show a hint of a velocity gradient perpendicular to the rotating disk...

متن کاملFar-infrared Census of Starburst-seyfert Connection
Far-infrared flux densities are newly extracted from the IRAS database for the RSA and CfA complete samples of Seyfert galaxies. These data are used to classify the Seyfert galaxies into those where the far-infrared continuum emission is dominated by the active galactic nucleus (AGN), circumnuclear starburst, or host galaxy. While AGN-dominant objects consist of comparable numbers of Seyfert 1 ...
متن کاملProbing circumnuclear molecular gas in NGC 5793 with OH absorption
We have observed the nuclear region of an edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5793 with VLBI in order to determine the morphology of the central continuum source at 6 and 18 cm and the distribution of OH molecular gas at 18 cm on parsec scales. NGC 5793, with a type 2 Seyfert nucleus, is known to have peculiar H2O maser features in its center, indicating the presence of a rotating disk/torus (Hagiwara et...
